demyelination n. a disease process selectively damaging the *myelin sheaths in the central or peripheral nervous system. This in turn effects the function of the nerve fibres, which the myelin normally supports. Demyelination may be the primary disorder, as in *multiple sclerosis, or it may occur after head injury or strokes.
