laparoscopy (peritoneoscopy, abdominoscopy)

laparoscopy (peritoneoscopy, abdominoscopy) n. examination of the abdominal structures (which are contained within the peritoneum) by means of an illuminated tubular instrument (*laparoscope) passed through a small incision in the wall of the abdomen. Laparoscopy is often used for examining the ovaries and Fallopian tubes as well as for performing one method of sterilization.
